We found the cutest apartment on Saturday (the one pictured), paid for background checks, and had our application accepted by the property managers. All we needed to do was sign the lease and it would have been ours. The apartment needs a few repairs -- such as replacing a doorknob, adding stoppers to every sink and bathtub, and replacing a closet rod -- before moving in. The leasing company only broom sweeps the apartment but does not deep clean it, so we requested that the place be cleaned by professionals. These are small repairs that any normal landlord would (and should) agree to do.
To make sure that the maintenance gets done, we wrote an addendum to the lease stating that all of these fixes are to be completed by mid-June (we would have moved at the beginning of June). Putting all of this on paper makes the property manager legally responsible for following through on promises made verbally. Well, once they saw this addendum they rejected our apartment application. Turns out that they had no plans on making these repairs. We were asked to not contact the leasing company again.
Woe are the poor tenants who end up leasing the place.
All of this went down yesterday. Hopefully we can still snag our second-choice apartment, which we applied for yesterday.
