Google's glucose monitor (Seattle Times)

If you're diabetic, if you're even a little tech savvy, and if you are okay with wearing contacts, then Google may be your savior.  For those individuals who have to be their own pancreas, this nifty little contact lens that monitors glucose levels in tears may be a lifesaver.  No needles are involved!

But here's the rub, hidden in the very last paragraph of this article:

"Many challenges remain. Among those is figuring out how to correlate glucose levels in tears as compared with blood. And what happens on windy days, while chopping onions or during very sad movies?"

It looks like it'll be at least a few years until it's ready for consumers.  Until then, I'll still remain in awe of how awesome medical technology can be.

UPDATE: According to Wired (click here for article), the idea for this contact originates from Microsoft.  The fact that Google "stole" the idea is not exactly a bad thing because Google has the means to turn the idea into reality.

"Yes, Google is following Microsoft with its new lens. But that means the gadget may actually change the world, rather than gathering dust in a lab."
